Where the team fits in

This role sits within the Personalisation and Privacy tribe, one of the Tribes that sit within the Consumer Group of the business lead by Melina Cruickshank, our Chief Product & Audience Officer. Consumer Group’s mandate is to be the number one destination for Australian property and real estate through having the most engaging and best real estate and property experience. The Personalisation and Privacy Tribe supports and develops the majority of our marketing technology stack and platforms, and a privacy first user experience which underpins REA’s revenue, product growth and world class user experience. Additionally, this tribe is home to the CX data science squad who own and build out audience and listing models that power next generation property experience but also the worlds leaving AVM from PropTrack.

What the role is all about

  • Leading teams of experienced full stack developers in both Australia and Xi'An
  • Working with Tech Leads and architects to ensure our solution is in line with our technical vision.
  • Informing delivery planning and technical design by providing a balanced view of options, effort, and quality considerations
  • Keeping abreast of the latest technology advancements to inform product and technical design.
  • Proactively contributing to the continuous improvement of products, technology, processes, and team development
  • Lead ML engineering strategic thinking, ensuring the appropriate machine learning practices across the business to drive data-led decisions and product innovations. 
  • Designing new or uplifting existing data pipelines and APIs using Scala, as well as data platform technology such as Kafka, Apache Flink, BigQuery and Airflow
  • Coach and mentor direct reports and act as a SME to ML engineers, data engineers and business stakeholders to upskill, share knowledge and best practices related to ML engineering and data science. 
  • Ensure industry best-practice approaches to ML engineering are maintained, including verifying the use of data is ethical and compliant with all legal (privacy) requirements. 

Who we’re looking for

  • A few runs on the board - you'll be experienced in leading engineering teams. 
  • Proven relevant leadership experience in ML engineering, data engineering or similar roles. 
  • Tertiary qualifications in ML or data engineering, software development, data science OR equivalent experience
  • Proficiency with machine learning in a commercial production environment - experience with developing APIs, streaming data (eg Flink, Kafka), and generative AI is a plus. 
  • Expert skills in developing long-term system architecture strategies. 
  • Expert in SQL, Python, and/or other relevant software/languages. We’re happy for you to learn the particulars on the job, but you'll need to be able to code. 
  • Extensive experience with dev-ops tools and techniques, particularly Docker, Git, GCP, AWS, and CI/CD.
