Where the team fits in

The Data Platform squad is responsible for shaping and delivering the future of our data platform architecture. We build it using a combination of commercial off-the-shelf products and bespoke REA components, including:

  • Google BigQuery data warehouse/data lake platform.

  • Bespoke batch ETL job orchestration platform built with Apache Airflow.

  • Open source based & white-labelled data catalogue + metadata management platform.

  • Apache Kafka stream processing platform.

Our mission is to make it easy to leverage REA Data. These systems are relied on by 50+ engineering teams and 300+ monthly users at REA, including Data Engineers, Data Scientists, Analysts, SQL Developers, Business Analysts, Product Managers and more.

What the role is all about

  • Designing, coding, testing, and deploying new data management tools and systems.

  • Supporting a robust platform for the business by building monitoring and observability, resiliency, and scalability into all our tools and systems.

  • Following agile software development practices such as test-driven development, continuous delivery and pair programming.

  • Sharing responsibility for all operational aspects of the software that we build, in support of our “you build it; you run it” philosophy where dev-ops is a part of everyday life.

  • Learning – we are constantly learning together, mentoring each other and striving to do things better

  • Working with direct leadership to understand business priorities and communicate technical options, review and report on progress and express ideas.

Who we’re looking for

  • Good skills in one or more mainstream programming languages, preferably Python.

  • Good understanding of design patterns, modern software development techniques and continuous delivery strategies.

  • Exposure to data engineering concepts and associated technologies such as Airflow, BigQuery Kafka, batch and real-time data pipelines, ELT, and SQL.

  • Exposure to Linux and shell scripting.

  • Experience with DevOps practices and techniques, such as Docker and CI/CD tools.

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with business stakeholders.

  • Ability to manage the competing demands of multiple projects in a timely manner.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and autonomously in a fast paced environment.
