Job Description

Canva’s Commitment and Mission

At Canva, we celebrate diversity. We deeply believe that bringing together diversity of thoughts, perspectives and expression is key to building the best product, team and company. We look for many different skills and abilities, as well as how you can enhance Canva and our culture. So, even if you don’t think you quite meet all of the skills listed or tick all the boxes, we’d still love to hear from you!

Our mission at Canva is to empower the world to design and since launching in 2013, we have grown exponentially, amassing over 100+ million monthly active users across 190 different countries and a team of over 3,000 people… and the best bit is that we’ve only achieved 1% of what we know we’re capable of.

Join us and design your future.

About the group you’ll be joining

The Collaboration group is on a mission to power creativity, work and learning with collaborative design. This year, our group is doubling down on a number of critical initiatives to help us achieve our company level strategy of driving teams and collaboration in Canva. We want to make Canva the tool that every team big and small wants to use to collaborate and communicate in everyday - from the classroom to the workplace.
So far we’ve launched a range of communication, real-time, sharing & publishing capabilities but this is just the beginning of our journey. As the Product Designer joining the Collaboration Group, you will help us drive towards making Canva a household name in every team.

About you

We are searching for an experienced Product Designer to help us lead the design direction and UX strategy for our core collaboration experiences in Canva. This includes defining and delivering end-to-end experiences that empower our users to move work forward through collaboration with their teams. Your sphere of ownership covers how our users:
Collaborate in real-time: creating delightful and performant experiences that communicate the presence of two to hundreds of people working together inside the same document at the same time.
Communicate with their team: How users communicate with one another though commenting, giving feedback, chat & more.
Manage notifications: How users are informed of important updates and their team's activity.
…plus more!

You will not only have the opportunity to optimise existing collaboration experiences in Canva but also the opportunity to define new and innovative collaborative experiences that truly empower creativity, work and learning. You will work with designers, product managers and engineers across the Collaboration Group, Teams and Education Supergroup, and Canva, and have a team-focused design mentality. You are excited for and have experience in leveraging every aspect of the user-centered design process to tackle challenging user problems and are comfortable collaborating with and influencing stakeholders across Canva to achieve alignment and buy-in.

Goals you'll achieve in the first 6-12 months

  • Understand the Canva product, our Teams offerings and our 2023 strategy.
  • Work with research to understand our users, and identify opportunities for collaboration improvements based on user insights and business strategies.
  • Ship your first collaborative communication feature to Canva users.
  • Inform and contribute to building out the Collaboration group’s roadmap by working closely with your triad, advocating for our users and through design exploration & validation.

What you’ll do

  • You’ll start from the very early stages: finding the right problem to tackle, exploring ideas for how to solve it and then refining it into a coherent solution
  • As a product designer on the team you will carry out: research, brainstorming, sketching, prototyping, and collaboration with our engineers to ship great products.
  • You will advocate for users and respect our users’ opinions through interviews, usability testing, and data analysis.
  • You’ll create user flows and wireframes that simplify user interactions.
  • You’ll create flowcharts, and journey maps to show the different stages that customers go through as they come into contact with Canva.
  • You’ll visually communicate your ideas through prototypes to test with users.
  • You’ll rapidly iterate through different design solutions; bucking convention in favour of progressive ideas.
  • You’ll partner with other designers, engineers, product developers and other disciplines throughout the company.
  • You’ll solve complex problems and whiteboard ideas to confidently come up with simple, elegant solutions that everyone can move forward with.
  • You are able to understand the different trade-offs and align design solutions to Canva business goals. Activities include: writing well-balanced strat docs; providing different design options to show trade-offs; creating hypothesis and experiments focussing on revenue and MAU growth; ability to apply industry trends to Canva scenarios and designs.

Experience the candidate will have

  • You'll be an individual contributor, who has multiple years of experience leading the design of a product or complex digital feature from end to end.
  • You'll ideally have experience designing product that is used by teams or enterprise businesses, although this is not a deal-breaker.
  • You'll have a portfolio that showcases your UX and UI skills.
  • You are a designer that is constantly inspired—motivating those around you through your passion and drive for what you do.
  • You are excited by regularly coming up with new ideas, shipping new products and features that address your users’ real needs.
  • You shine through your designs—creating user flows and wireframes that simplify user interactions
  • You are eager to visually communicate your ideas through prototypes to test with users.
  • You thrive in a collaborative workplace; partnering with other designers, engineers, product developers and other disciplines throughout the company.
  • You appreciate big-picture thinking. While details are everything, creating an experience that always keeps our users in mind is equally as important.
  • You are a problem solver that’s excited by a challenge. You enjoy sitting in a room and whiteboarding ideas to confidently come up with simple, elegant solutions that everyone can move forward with.
  • You are an empathetic user advocate that values the backing of research and data analysis when it comes to designing modern solutions.
  • You enjoy a little flexibility in your work. Our growth means there are constantly new things to work on every day, as such it’s likely that you’ll often be working across the board on new and exciting projects.
