About the Group
We are responsible for building systems and services that deliver unique and personalised experiences for billions of humans. Marketing Platform teams use advanced segmentation, ML, automation, and high-volume transactional systems to enable intelligent communication at scale. The group priorities include simplified internal tooling, rapid learning and measurement, engagement optimization, and future-proofing for Canva's Crazy Big Goals.

Within the group, we have 5 multidisciplinary teams (~30 engineers) including Backend, Frontend, ML, Data, Marketing Operations, and Product Management. In order to ensure the team, platform, and business continues to scale and optimally serve our millions of users, we’re welcoming a skilled Software Engineering Leader - focused on technical strategy and direction, people leadership and management, and cross-collaboration to lead engineering for the group.

About the Role
As the Group Engineering Manager, you will represent Engineering in the leadership team for the MarTech Group. This will involve working closely with Product, Marketing, and Data leads.

The technical strategies you develop and implement will lead to solving problems of huge impact across the business. Your roadmap will encompass innovative "big bets" that will deliver step-change growth for Canva. It will be your responsibility to set the technical strategy and oversee and deliver on highly complex, green-field projects which venture into new domains for the business.

What you’ll do

  • Collaborate with engineers, in both systems and data, to scope and solve complex problems
  • Coach and support the software engineering team leads and advocate for a culture of psychological safety
  • Scale engineering to meet the growing needs of the roadmap
  • Develop the Marketing Platform group by bringing on board exceptional talent and partnering with recruiters where needed. You will also identify and develop emerging leaders internally by nurturing the progression of current Canvanauts, creating a team for the present and future needs of Canva.
  • Foster a culture of communication, bridging the communication gap between teams, groups, and company leadership.
  • Coordinating and communicating across various specialties and parts of the business to understand the impact and feasibility of strategic goals within the group.
  • Ensure the Marketing Platform group is constantly working towards delivering on the group strategy and vision by continuously assessing current and future business needs.
  • Drive planning and refinement of seasonal goals, ensuring there is alignment between the company, group, and teams.
  • Drive delivery of large, cross-team, and cross-group initiatives and projects from ideation to completion.
  • Set the direction by owning the technical strategy and roadmap, and deploying resources effectively.

What you bring

  • You are still in tune with software engineering fundamentals and first principles.
  • Proven technical and people leadership, having previously created high performing and psychologically safe teams, where everyone is able to share their best ideas and be their best selves.
  • Experience leading multiple teams, through leading managers, and guided by company missions, goals, and strategies.
  • Invested in working with engineers on growth and development opportunities to help further their skills and grow into new roles, with an ability to deliver relevant and timely feedback (positive & constructive) to help them continuously improve and learn.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; with the ability to work with a diverse range of individuals from different backgrounds, with different expertise, and with different professional and personal needs.
  • Demonstrated experience making careful engineering tradeoffs, particularly around "Build vs Buy", evaluating potential third-party systems to partner with, and managing and working with vendors to meet Canva's business needs.
  • Strong customer focus to understand the use cases and requirements of internal stakeholders, and identify opportunities to empower them to do their best work.
  • Be capable of leading by example - promoting Canva’s values, no-blame mentality, and engineering values.

It would be great if you had (not essential!)

  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining complex systems to apply statistics and machine learning at scale.
  • Experience architecting and building high-performance, Martech/Adtech systems capable of processing large volumes of data in real-time, and that is secure and preserves customer privacy.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Martech and Adtech landscapes, architectures, and vendors. Familiarity with marketing channels a plus, e.g. Emails & Messaging systems, Paid Acquisition channels including Search Engine Marketing (SEM), mobile marketing, and social channels.
