Group Engineering Lead - Ecosystem

  • Canva
  • Sydney NSW, Australia

Job Description

We’re constantly working towards making Canva the best place to work, for everyone. We believe deeply that bringing together diversity of thoughts, perspectives and expression is key for building the best product for our equally diverse community all around the world. We celebrate uniqueness and whatever makes you, you and encourage everyone who wants to help us transform the way the world designs, to join us on this journey. We value all different types of experiences. If you don’t think you quite meet all of the qualifications, we’d still love to hear from you.
About UsAt Canva, our mission is to democratise design and empower creativity for anyone and everyone, on every platform. Inspired by a team of talented thinkers, an amazing culture and a remarkable growth trajectory – we’re out to change the world, one design at a time.
Since launch in August 2013, we have grown exponentially, amassing over 60 million monthly active users across 190 different countries who have created more than 6 Billion designs. We are one of the world’s fastest-growing technology companies and we have only achieved about 1% of what we want to do.
About the groupThe Ecosystem group is a strategic venture which is critical in enabling Canva to reach 1B monthly active users. Our vision is to create an abundant ecosystem that tailors Canva for these billion delighted users, through a comprehensive, useful, and effective developer platform, its companion APIs, and end-user experiences. Fundamentally, we believe that to reach 1 billion users we will need to continue to reach users of all demographics with an ever-broadening spectrum of needs.
Canva Ecosystem is a team with 50 engineers predominantly located in Sydney, Australia. Our developer platform has had its foundations laid with a handful of narrowly scoped integration points within the product - now it’s time for us to go big with an API surface area that is significantly larger and with the potential to build what we cannot imagine. There is so much opportunity in this space and our crazy big goal is to have hundreds of developers and thousands of integrations built with Canva.
The Ecosystem strategy involves three priorities:1. Build and scale the Canva API to enable deep integrations into (and outside of) Canva’s editor product2. Create a truly delightful experience for both our developers and their customers3. Building high-quality integrations with strategic partners for the benefit of Canva’s users
This is an emerging area within Canva that presents the opportunity for a dynamic engineering leader to support the team to build out major new areas of activity, sustain and improve on the delight of the developer platform, and add meaningfully to Canva’s overall success.
About the roleAt the core, the Ecosystem Group Engineering Lead is responsible for driving the success of the engineering team and building a high-performing and cohesive team that is aligned in reaching the vision of the Ecosystem Group. Group Engineering Leads do so in a way that reflects Canva's culture and values. The Group Engineering Lead is a key member of the Group Leadership Team as the coach of the largest specialty area.
The Ecosystem Group Engineering Lead plays a vital role in building a world-leading developer platform that serves a global developer community and does so in an equitable and sustainable way. Canva Ecosystem has the potential to be a world-leading developer community that sets a new bar for delight and design experiences.  It is expected to scale up in massive ways over the next 5 years and we are looking for an engineering leader with proven experience building high functioning API and developer platform teams with high growth trajectories.
Immediate GoalsCanva Ecosystem is a growing business within Canva and relies on a number of other teams to deliver the core user experience. The Group Engineering Lead will need to align these groups to achieve the vision. The Lead will need to quickly build context on how Canva’s platform is structured and work collaboratively to build a consensus for the approach to increasing the surface area of Ecosystem APIs in a manner that supports scaling.
In addition, as the Ecosystem scales, the operational needs of the developer platform technology need to scale as well and do so reliably and with quality control. Working with Canva’s customer support teams and with our developer experience teams to ensure scalable and reliable operations will be important.
Finally, executing a well-oiled marketplace model unlocks scale, but needs to be managed carefully to ensure we don't lose the delight for users or developers. Growth will bring new opportunities for the ecosystem business and the Group Engineering Lead will need to jump on these when they present themselves.

  • Responsibility for the team’s execution and implementation of the Ecosystem vision
  • Partnership with key stakeholders of the Ecosystem Group’s product and design leaders to set the vision, strategy, and goals for the group
  • Ownership of the technical design, roadmap, and strategy to support a 50-100x scale of usage and capabilities

  • People leadership and management within the Ecosystem engineering group as a coach for 5-6 Engineering Team Leads
  • Serve as an advocate for Canva’s Ecosystem among the target developer community

  • Have a deep passion for creating delightful developer experiences and consistent, scalable, and valuable APIs.
  • Be someone who combines big picture thinking with sweating the details of execution, both for the developer and user experiences

  • Flexible hours and a hybrid working model which values work-life balance
  • Our very own Canva University, internal coaching, and Employee Support Programs to help you be your best
  • Unique and flexible leave options so you can recharge, give back, support others or focus on your own professional development

This will provide tremendous upside potential for the Group Engineering Lead to grow and develop. You’ll be supported by an experienced leadership team whose role includes coaching the mentorship of Group Leads.
