Job Description

Babcock New Zealand are looking for Skilled Marine Fitter/Mechanics to join our team based on the Devonport Naval Base.

 

Join our team at Babcock NZ Ltd and take on a vital role as a Marine Fitter, where you will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of ship and boat propulsion machinery.

You'll work on a variety of tasks, from repairing gearboxes to installing auxiliary systems, ensuring our vessels are in top condition.

Hourly Rates

 

  • $40 per hour
  • $60 – 1.5x after 40hrs
  • $80 – 2x after 43hrs

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Perform Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) of ship and boat propulsion machinery and auxiliary equipment, including gearboxes, bearings, shafting, propellers, rudders, stabilizers, bow & stern thrusters.
  • Install, repair, maintain, and set to work auxiliary systems like pumps, coolers, compressors, HVAC, valves, pipework, and hydraulics.
  • Disassemble, repair, and rebuild both main and auxiliary propulsion machinery & equipment, ensuring testing, repairing, replacing, and aligning components as needed.
  • Conduct pre/post maintenance performance checks.
  • Collaborate with other Babcock Maintenance teams during peak load periods and work collaboratively with other departments of the business.

 

About you

 

The ideal candidate for this role should possess a Level 4 Trade Certificate in a relevant engineering discipline and hold a Class 1 NZ Driver's License. They must have a diverse set of mechanical and electrical engineering skills and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve machinery issues.

Quick decision-making skills and excellent communication are crucial, especially in high-pressure situations. While not mandatory, having marine engineering experience, the ability to manage teams, and knowledge of small boat systems and marine diesel engines would be advantageous.

This role is perfect for an individual who thrives in a complex environment, values composure under pressure, and is eager to contribute to the continuous improvement of our operations.

 

Key Required Skills

 

  • Trade Certificate (Level 4) in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Full NZ Driver’s License (Class 1 minimum).
  • Wide range of mechanical and/or electrical engineering skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to diagnose mechanical system or machinery faults.
  • Ability to make quick and confident decisions in emergencies, along with excellent communication and customer relation skills.
